Mission Overview

Extra-Mission: in search of the last mountain gorillas

Let's talk about it !

 FAQ

You will need a valid passport.

You will need to pay for an entry visa. Conditions and prices vary according to the country of arrival and the number of countries you plan to visit during your stay.

- The easiest way for me is to take the East African Visa, which costs $100 usd and which you can get on arrival in Rwanda but which you have to apply for online if you arrive in Uganda. This is the best option if you want to visit several countries in the region (Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya).

- Alternatively, you can only take the visa for the country concerned if you plan to stay in just 1 of the 2 countries.

- Visa Rwanda 50$

- Visa Uganda 50$ + services fees

- You won't need a visa for Congo DRC, even though the Rwenzori mountains straddle the 2 countries.

The yellow fever vaccine is compulsory for this region. I invite you to make an appointment at your nearest travel vaccination centre/tropical medicine centre to discuss and allocate the recommended vaccines. COVID just in case.

Take out your own travel insurance. You'll sign a liability waiver.

You are responsible for yourselves.

I'll talk to you personally to make sure you've got everything you need, depending on where you're from.

I'll send you a packlist in due course! Mountaineering equipment will be available on site, but you are of course welcome to bring your own.

The price of this trip varies according to the number of people and the arrival airport. To give you an idea, the price for the ascent will be between €2450 and €2950.

If you'd like to go gorilla trekking, we can discuss it together!

Many adventurers like you dream of living the most impressive and incredible experiences. Only, it's more fun with friends and makes for unforgettable memories to share. But when it comes to extreme expeditions, it's sometimes hard to find friends who are ready to experience the unthinkable and step out of their comfort zone. That's why I've created a Facebook group "les sunlights des tropiques"  where you can find ‘Travel Buddies’ and share your best moments, ask questions and get advice!

The Rwenzori Mountains are one of the wildest mountain ranges in the world. There are no shelters on the way, as on other climbs. You'll sleep in tents in the middle of nature. Occasionally, there will be small wooden structures to shelter the tent a little more, but no comfort can be expected on this side of the mission. Outside the national park, you'll stay in a small local hotel (remember, we're lost in the middle of Uganda).

For the ‘Gorilla’ mission, you will spend the night on an island in the middle of a lake surrounded by the Virunga volcanoes.

You need to be in excellent physical shape for such an expedition. You'll be walking dozens and dozens of kilometres a day, through jungle and swamps in rubber boots for days on end, climbing glaciers and operating at altitudes of 5000m, where there's only half as much oxygen as we're used to. It's not something to be taken lightly.

I can send you a training programme if you wish.

For the glacier climbing part, you don't necessarily need any previous experience, the technical difficulty is affordable and you can learn on the spot how to use the equipment with the mountain guides if you've never used crampons or ice axes before.

I recommend that you visit your doctor beforehand to have a check-up and explain the expedition. Ask your doctor for a prescription for Diamox or other altitude sickness medication, which could be a great help in the event of a problem, or even save your life in extreme cases.

Is it safe there?

As in every country in the world, you have to be careful where you step. The mission is taking place in the South-West of the country, which does not present any particular security risks. Although it borders on the North Kivu region of Congo DRC, where the situation is very serious, Uganda is spared and not affected by these conflicts on its territory.

You'll be in the best hands, and everything will go perfectly smoothly as long as you respect the place and its inhabitants.

If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them. You can contact me by email, by message on Whatsapp or we can also call each other.
